I’m Dr. Dhruvit Kalathiya, an MBBS graduate from B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, and currently a 3rd-year MD Physiology resident at B. J. Medical College. Alongside my medical training, I have explored alternative career pathways beyond clinical medicine, including management and finance, and have cleared CFA Level 1 & 2 and CAT with 99+ percentile. I would be happy to mentor students who are exploring alternative career options after MBBS, as well as those interested in MD Physiology, academic medicine, teaching, research, and career opportunities after Physiology.

Don’t feel pressured to follow the conventional path in medicine. MBBS opens doors beyond clinical practice, including teaching, research, public health, healthcare management, finance, and entrepreneurship. Explore early. Talk to seniors and professionals, attend workshops, and gain exposure to different careers before making a decision. Most importantly, choose a career based on your strengths, interests, and long-term goals, not societal expectations. Your first career choice does not have to define your entire life. Stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to change direction.
I wish I had known earlier that Physiology offers much more than I initially assumed. Beyond teaching and academics, it provides opportunities in research, healthcare, clinical physiology, medical education, and several interdisciplinary fields. I also wish I had explored these possibilities before choosing the programme. Understanding the diverse career pathways early would have helped me plan my skills and experiences more strategically.
I chose Physiology because it gave me the opportunity to continue in academics while also giving me the time and flexibility to explore other career pathways beyond medicine. It allowed me to develop my interest in teaching and research while exploring fields like management and finance.
