Don’t choose a branch only because of its rank, reputation or what others are choosing. Choose a specialty that fits your personality, interests, desired lifestyle and the kind of work you see yourself doing for the next 20–30 years. Understand the actual day-to-day life of the specialty before making your decision. And remember, there is no universally “best” branch—there is a best branch for you.
The reality of a specialty is very different from what you see in textbooks or hear during counselling. I wish I had understood earlier how much the work environment, training exposure, faculty, case volume, workload and long-term lifestyle can influence your experience. Choosing the right programme is not just about the branch or the institute name—it is about whether the training environment will help you become the specialist you want to be.
When patient is on last hope of saviour, Anaesthesiology comes into play. I chose Anaesthesiology because it combines physiology, pharmacology, critical thinking and hands-on procedural skills. I enjoy the fact that an anaesthesiologist has to make important decisions quickly, manage patients across a wide range of specialties, and be prepared for both routine and critical situations. Over time, I also realised that Anaesthesiology offers diverse career paths—from operating rooms and critical care to trauma, pain medicine, regional anaesthesia and academic practice.
