I am a second-year resident in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Guntur Medical College, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Attending NEET-PG counselling can be a gruelling experience, filled with uncertainty, endless doubts, and, at times, misinformation. Having gone through this process myself, I strongly believe that it is the responsibility of seniors to guide and support aspiring residents with authentic and practical information about colleges, departments, and residency programmes. Uncertainty has become the norm of NEET-PG counselling. Stay level headed. Analyse all options before entering. Make an excel sheet if needed. Discuss with anyone whom you can connect with. Never hesitate to ask questions to any residents, they will be more than ready to help.
Academic schedule, Patient load, and all the facilities available for a particular department. Especially for Emergency Medicine Department, and other few new departments, it is important to know about the age of the department in that institution.
Emergency Medicine is one such branch which shifts between the absolute highs of adrenaline during your shift followed by absolute peace after our shift. Patients seeks you in absolute worst times of their lives. You wield the power and knowledge to change the verdict between life and death. Satisfaction thus obtained is unparalleled. Do not worry about work-life balance. EM has better work life balance than most of the clinical departments. After your shift, no one calls me to ask or inform regarding any of the patients (unless you ask them to inform). Your colleague will take care of that.
